World Book Day is almost upon us, which means that many schools around the country will be calling for pupils to dress up for the occasion.
The annual event has been on the go in the UK and Ireland since 1997, with its main goal to encourage a love of reading among youngsters.
Part of that mission is to help inspire enthusiasm among more reluctant readers - for example, by hosting costume days - as well as providing children with the opportunity to own their own books by distributing more than 15 million World Book Day tokens each year.
As World Book Day aims to be as inclusive as possible, the organisation offers a number of alternatives for dressing up such as wearing pyjamas, but for parents hoping to help their child figure out a last-minute costume, we can help.

9. Diary of a Wimpy Kid
If you have a printer, or a bit of time to spare, a costume inspired by Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid books could be an easy option to pick. There are plenty of online guides to help create masks with a super simple base outfit made up of items you should already have at home. | Puffin

10. No costume at all
While it is a good way to get youngsters interested in reading, there is no need for costumes involved for World Book Day. If others at school will be dressing up but they aren't keen, try sending your child to school with a notebook or plain t-shirt you're willing to sacrifice to get some recommendations from their peers. | Canva

11. Dennis the Menace
Dennis the Menace is an iconic character and relatively easy to pull together a last minute costume for. The best option would be a red and black stripy t-shirt, but if you are without one - and have a little bit of time to spare - then you can DIY one using either fabric paint or duck tape to create your own stripes. | DC Thomson

12. Peter Rabbit
Peter Rabbit can make an adorable and easy World Book Day costume for younger children. With Easter just around the corner, finding some bunny ears will be easier than normal, but even without there's the option of using card to make your own. Aside from the headband and cottontail, all you need is a blue jacket, blazer or cardigan and a carrot to create the look. | Warne & Co
