Exclusive:Top 100 Scottish manufacturing companies revealed
Scotland’s manufacturing base is often framed through heritage and heavy industry.

Scotland’s manufacturing base is often framed through heritage and heavy industry.
The five companies profiled in this Manufacturing 100 edition, however, reflect the depth, diversity and international reach of Scotland’s modern industrial base.
They operate in defence, subsea engineering, medtech, advanced optics and premium food, sectors where precision, regulation, export capability and long-term contracts define competitive advantage.
Joe Pacitti, managing director of the Centre for Engineering, Education and Development (CeeD), said:
“The importance of manufacturing and its contribution to the economy is well documented in terms of high level jobs and export sales.
“However, it is the breadth of technology and breadth of the disciplines that are supported in the sector that is often less celebrated. At CeeD we regularly bring companies together to share best practice across all aspects of the company.
“Deep technology offers practical opportunities to use AI for productivity gain and manufacturing is a sector that provides both economic and social value to Scotland”
At one end of the spectrum sits Chemring Energetics UK, embedded in sovereign defence supply chains where technical certification, security clearance and programme continuity create high barriers to entry.
Its markets are underpinned by structural increases in defence spending.
In subsea engineering, JFD Global illustrates another dimension of Scottish manufacturing strength which is complex engineered systems combined with recurring service income.
Designing and maintaining life-support and underwater technologies requires deep specialist capability, while global contracts provide geographic diversification.
Healthcare technology adds a different growth dynamic.
Terumo Aortic and Optos operate within tightly regulated environments where precision engineering meets clinical demand.
Both businesses show how advanced manufacturing increasingly blends hardware, software and service models, creating durable export revenues supported by long product lifecycles and regulatory defensibility.
Walker’s Shortbread demonstrates that scale and resilience are not confined to high-tech sectors.
Premium positioning, export distribution and family ownership have sustained international growth in a competitive global food market.
Taken together, these firms highlight three defining themes within Scottish manufacturing which are export intensity, regulatory depth and recurring revenue models.
Whether supplying defence ministries, offshore operators, hospitals or supermarkets, each operates in markets where technical expertise and international reach matter more than volume alone.
Chemring Energetics UK
Ayrshire-based Chemring Energetics UK manufactures specialist energetic materials and safety-critical components for defence and aerospace markets.
Operating within highly regulated supply chains, the Stevenston business produces precision systems that support sovereign capability and long-term government contracts.
Demand is underpinned by rising defence expenditure and security priorities across allied nations.
Its combination of technical expertise, certification depth and export exposure positions it as a high-value manufacturer with strong barriers to entry and recurring programme-based revenues.
JFD Global
Aberdeen-based JFD Global is a subsea engineering specialist supplying defence, offshore energy and marine industries worldwide.
The company designs and manufactures complex life-support and underwater systems, supported by long-term maintenance and service contracts.
With customers across North America, Europe and Asia, JFD blends engineering expertise with international reach.
Its model combines capital projects with recurring service income, reflecting the balance many Scottish industrial firms must strike as they scale in specialist global markets.
Terumo Aortic
Inchinann-based Terumo Aortic, winner of the Medical, Pharma & Healthcare Manufacturer of the Year category at Insider Media’s Made in Scotland awards, manufactures complex vascular and aortic medical devices from its Scottish base, serving global healthcare markets.
Operating in a highly regulated environment, the company invests heavily in precision engineering, quality systems and compliance.
Its export footprint spans North America, Europe and Asia, reflecting demand for specialist cardiovascular products.
The business illustrates how Scotland’s advanced manufacturing capability extends into high-value medical technology with durable demand drivers and international growth potential.
Optos
Optos designs and manufactures ultra-widefield retinal imaging systems used by clinicians worldwide.
Based in Dunfermline, the business combines precision optics, electronics and medical software within a regulated healthcare environment. Its technology enables earlier detection of eye disease, supporting global healthcare systems.
With recurring income from servicing and upgrades alongside hardware sales, Optos reflects a hybrid manufacturing model where engineering expertise and digital capability underpin long-term customer relationships and export growth.
Walker’s Shortbread
Walker’s Shortbread remains one of Scotland’s best-known food manufacturers, producing premium baked goods for domestic and international markets.
Family-owned and export-focused, the Aberlour company combines traditional production methods with global distribution.
Brand strength supports pricing power in competitive food markets, while international sales diversify revenue beyond the UK.
