Scotland's audit market bucks Big Four’s sway
Scotland 500 reveals a broader adviser market, andJohnston Carmichael head of audit asserts relationships and local trust still matter
Scotland’s biggest businesses are not as reliant on the Big Four auditors as many might assume.

Analysis of the Scotland 500 reveals a broader and more competitive audit market, with Scotland’s biggest employers and mid-market firms retaining a significant foothold alongside the global accountancy giants.
Johnston Carmichael tops the ranking with 61 audit appointments, ahead of EY, Azets, PwC, Deloitte and KPMG.
Graham Marjoribanks, head of audit at Johnston Carmichael, says the figures reflect years of relationship-building rather than simple scale.
He explains: “When you’ve been around for a long time, you get really plugged into local markets. That’s what underpins where we are today.”
While EY, PwC, Deloitte and KPMG collectively audit 130 Scotland 500 businesses, the majority sit outside the Big Four.
The figures point to a market that remains more diverse than many larger corporate environments, reflecting Scotland’s strong base of owner-managed, family-owned and mid-market businesses.
But advisers say audit is becoming more demanding. As reporting requirements rise and boards face greater scrutiny from investors, lenders and regulators, audit appointments increasingly reflect wider strategic considerations rather than technical compliance alone.
Graham says: “Your ability to deliver a compliant audit is table stakes. Businesses expect advisers to understand the issues they are facing and bring broader insight.”
The data also highlights concentration at the top of the market. Just nine firms audit more than 20 Scotland 500 companies each, while 59 firms handle between one and four mandates.
