ON this day in 1739 saw the first edition of the Scots Magazine being published.

The magazine was originally founded as a current affairs journal, and was often the first source of news for many Scots. It is also the oldest magazine in the world still in publication, albeit with a few gaps in its publication history.

It has always been highly regarded for its coverage of world affairs and has reported on the end of the Jacobite rebellion, the Napoleonic wars, two world wars and finally the establishment of the Scottish Parliament.

The magazine itself has now been owned by current owners DC Thompson since 1927.
