Despite the delay of Rockstar’s latest Grand Theft Auto game, it is still set to be a busy year for games.
From the beginning of 2025, we’ve already had releases such as Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Monster Hunter Wilds , as well as new and exciting intellectual property such as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 making waves.
Despite GTA IV being delayed until May 2026, there is still plenty to look forward to in the gaming industry this year with big releases expected from a variety of studios around the world - including Scotland’s very own Build a Rocket Boy.
Founded by former GTA producer Leslie Benzies, the Edinburgh-based studio is gearing up to release its very own AAA action game MindsEye, with more highly anticipated titles out this year including Death Stranding 2 and Mafia: The Old Country. That is without mentioning the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 release in June, which will see dozens of games remastered for the console and new entries in franchises such as Pokémon.
Why not take GTA’s delay as an opportunity to explore something different? Here are 27 of the biggest games coming out in 2025.

13. Ghost of Yōtei
The follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei is set in 1603 – more than 300 years after the events of the first game. The PlayStation 5 exclusive title will follow Atsu, as she adopts the persona of The Ghost to hunt down those responsible for the death of her family. With the same stunning visuals as the first game, but with new mechanics and gameplay improvements, it was nominated for Most Anticipated Game at the 2024 Game Awards. | Sucker Punch Productions / Sony Interactive Entertainment

14. Metal Eden
Metal Eden is a new sci-fi FPS from Reikon Games, set in a world where humanity’s consciousness has transcended the need for flesh and instead resides within robots. While the premise is somewhat similar to 2005 animated film Robots, players instead take on the role of advanced android ASKA to explore and uncover the mysteries of a lost paradise. Published by Deep Silver, it has been delayed but is still set to be released on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S at some point in 2025. | Reikon Games / Deep Silver

15. Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Without a firm timeline – likely to do with developers waiting for the release date of the Nintendo Switch 2 to be confirmed – Pokémon Legends: Z-A is part of the ninth generation of games in the series, and is a sequel to Pokémon X and Y. Coming out on Nintendo Switch, the game is set in Lumiose City where work is under way to mould the city into a place of both people and Pokémon. | Nintendo / Pokemon Company

16. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds
Similar to 2019’s Team Sonic Racing, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is a kart racing game set within the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Developed by Sega, it is set to be released in 2025 on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC. | Sega
