A DEVELOPMENT in Edinburgh’s Old Town has beaten off competition from the SSE Hydro in Glasgow to scoop a prestigious architecture award.

Advocate’s Close, designed by Morgan McDonnell Architecture, was named the best building in Scotland after being shortlisted alongside 12 other buildings in the country, including the Hydro. It won the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award - a prize worth £25,000.

A judges’ citation for the £30 million development said: “Intricately woven into the fabric of the upper Old Town, this development encompasses nine listed buildings. Combining commercial units, a restaurant, offices and a bar/bistro with serviced apartments, the development brings new vibrancy to this precious but previously neglected area of the World Heritage Site.”

The late Professor Andy MacMillan, the judging chair for the awards and one of Scotland’s leading architects, was remembered at the awards, held in the National Museum of Scotland.

The Best Building in Scotland Award was established by architect and entrepreneur Andrew Doolan 12 years ago.
